AND/OR searching

If you enter more than one word in the search box, the directory automatically treats this as an AND search. Therefore, typing radford road would cause the directory to search for radford AND road, but not necessarily where the words appear next to each other. To search for entries where the words appear together you should use phrase searching.

The directory will also allow you to use OR to search for several words or phrases at the same time.

For example:
  • Searching for radford road would find entries containing "radford" and "road", but not necessarily together.
  • Searching for radford OR road would find entries containing either word, returning many more results.

Searching for phrases

A phrase is considered to be a set of words, such as a name, which you may want to search for. A phrase search can be done by enclosing your phrase in speech marks "like this".

For example:
  • Searching for "radford road" would return entries containing that specific phrase
  • Whereas, searching for radford road would find entries containing "radford" and "road", but not necessarily together.

Wildcard searching

Wildcard searching is where you may not be sure of the spelling of a word you want to search for or want to find variations on a word. To perform a wildcard search, insert a * in place of the missing letter(s).

For example:
  • Searching for Sc*t would return entries matching words such as Scout, Scott, Scoot, etc.
  • Searching for Parent* would return entries matching Parent, Parents, Parenting, Parental, etc.
